Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports, “The Washington Wizards appear to be getting a jump on their offseason business.A contract extension with Antawn Jamison that would keep the veteran forward off the free-agent market is “imminent,” according to NBA front-office sources.”

Wolves Extend Offers to Gomes, Richard and Smith

The Wolves announced Monday that the team has extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Ryan Gomes, Chris Richard and Craig Smith. In related news, Sebastian Telfair and Kirk Snyder will both become unrestricted free agents after the June 30 deadline. That doesn’t mean the Wolves can’t sign either player to respective deals … But if another team makes an offer to Telfair and Snyder that the Wolves choose to match, neither player is obligated to re-sign with Minnesota.

In the USA TODAY, Kelly Whiteside writes “During the first day of Olympic practice for the U.S. men’s basketball team, the players gathered around a large flat-screen TV on the sideline and watched Marvin Gaye perform the The Star-Spangled Banner at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. ?Instead of having a fight song or whatever, that’s our song,’ coach Mike Krzyzewski said while standing on the court at Cox Pavilion on UNLV’s campus Saturday. ?I wanted them to envision the gold medal game on Aug. 24th, envision being on the gold medal stand and the national anthem being played.’”

Arenas Goes on Open Market

In the WASHINGTON POST, Ivan Carter writes “Gilbert Arenas said he opted out of the final year of his contract with the idea he would remain with the Washington Wizards. When NBA free agency officially opens at midnight tomorrow, Arenas will have an opportunity to show he was sincere. According to a league source familiar with the situation, Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld plans on soon offering Arenas a lucrative long-term contract, one that could cover up to six years. ”

Rockets Bid to Hold Landry With Qualifying Offer

In the HOUSTON CHRONICLE, Fran Blinebury writes “The Rockets extended a qualifying offer to restricted free-agent forward Carl Landry on Sunday. In his first season out of Purdue, the 6-9 Landry averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games. According to the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, the qualifying offer establishes the Rockets’ right of first refusal. Restricted free agents may sign an offer with any team, but the Rockets have the ability to match any offer to Landry.”

For Magic Johnson, the NBA Was Only Halftime

In the LOS ANGELES TIMES, Mike Bresnahan and Greg Johnson write “Earvin “Magic” Johnson announced his arrival as a businessman 13 years ago, when he took part in an unusual meeting with gang leaders from the Bloods and the Crips. At the time, Johnson was building a movie theater in Baldwin Hills. Would the gang members, Johnson asked, be kind enough not to shoot it up? ‘I just laid it out to them that I’m building this theater for the community,’ Johnson, the former Lakers basketball standout, recalled from his seventh-floor office in Beverly Hills. ‘You can’t have anything happen at this theater because we’re going to hire your cousins, your mothers, your sons and daughters. You come in here and shoot up the place, it might be your own relatives inside.’ The theater stands peacefully to this day, largely untouched by violence.”
