Folks in Connecticut, Indiana and New York had to have been wondering what they had done to deserve the latest twist in the Eastern Conference race. Just when it appeared Cheryl Ford’s season-ending knee injury had left the Shock vulnerable in the frontcourt — an area where Detroit has regularly outmuscled opponents during the postseason — along comes the league’s ninth-best rebounder this season and one of its most seasoned postseason post players. From the success he has had with Ford and Plenette Pierson to up-and-down results from Kara Braxton and former posts Ruth Riley and Katie Feenstra, Laimbeer (and assistant Rick Mahorn) have more or less relied on young post players. Now they have a veteran in McWilliams-Franklin who ought to remind them a lot of the veterans who knew every trick of the trade for the Pistons en route to NBA titles in 1988-89 and 1989-90.?

Coach K To Help Make Olympic Program Long-Term Success

On ESPN.COM, Andy Katz reports “Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski isn’t done with USA Basketball after coaching the Americans to the gold medal with a thrilling win over Spain in Beijing last Sunday. He’s just getting started. Krzyzewski said Wednesday by phone from Durham, N.C., that he will continue to be involved in helping USA Basketball with the model that national team managing director Jerry Colangelo organized three years ago. A three-year commitment from players and coaches is being praised for creating a winning atmosphere around the national team. Currently, the lower levels of USA Basketball, notably the junior national teams in tournaments at the under-20 and under-18 levels, have yearly turnover of players and coaches.”

Australia’s Mills Waiting On NBA Chance

ABC News reports “Australian point guard Patrick Mills says he is yet to be approached by NBA clubs despite an impressive performances at the Beijing Olympics. Mills was the Boomers’ highest pointscorer in Beijing, and finished in the top 10 in the tournament for the most steals. His skills attracted praise from American commentators who said he had the talent to play in the world’s premier basketball competition, the NBA. But the 20-year-old starlet says playing college basketball in the United States limits his opportunities for now.”

Trail Blazers Sign Luke Lackson, Steven Hill and Jamaal Tatum

The Portland Trail Blazers signed forward Luke Jackson, rookie center Steven Hill and rookie guard Jamaal Tatum, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Jackson (6-7, 215), a four-year NBA veteran, has appeared in 73 career games, averaging 3.5 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 9.9 minutes.

Lakers Sign Second-Rounder Joe Crawford

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Joe Crawford, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.
Selected by the Lakers with the 58th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Crawford, a 22 year-old native of Detroit, Michigan, played four seasons at the University of Kentucky, averaging 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 127 games (76 starts).

Warriors’ Ellis Undergoes Successful Surgery, Out Three Months

Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis, who suffered a Grade 3 high ankle sprain, a torn deltoid ligament and a syndesmosis disruption of his left ankle last Thursday, underwent successful surgery today to repair the ligament and will be sidelined a minimum of three-plus months, it was announced today. Ellis informed the team that he suffered the injury while working out in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi.
